St Mary’s Friendship Club

The club members meet in St Mary’s Parish Hall, Newton (at the corner of Talbot Road and Cartwright Street.) The 346 bus stops right outside.

We meet every Tue from 1:30pm to 4:00pm each week, apart from during the month of August. Everyone is welcome to come along. The Friendship club is there to provide a venue and a friendly atmosphere for the local community to meet together and make new friends, and renew old friendships as well. About 30 people come along most weeks, so the chances are that you’ll know at least one person there.

The club is run by the members for the members, and we plan the timetable and activities together. We do lots of different activities, such as trips out, bingo, craft sessions, shopping trips, & garden centres.

Do come along any Tuesday and join us for a cuppa, a biscuit, and a chat.

If you are interested please ring Sheila on 01457 513583 or just come along.

A review of 2014

During this year we have been very lucky to have received some community funding which has helped us fund some very exciting days out to places like Cosmo Bingo, Compo's Cafe, Rivington Barn, Daisynook Garden Centre and Oswaldtwistle Mill.

We do tend to like eating at our club, so Cream Teas, Pancakes (for Shrove Tuesday), Afternoon Tea, Cheese and Wine and a Christmas Party was organised and enjoyed by everyone.

This years we also had visits from Barbara Begg and co to sing about the War Years. A very informative talk from Age UK Tameside. We also has a  Cake Decorating Demonstration from Lynn. Chris Viney who is working with Rev Annie Woodcock dropped in to introduce himself and tell us about his life. Hilda Gregory, one of our original members gave us a talk on her very interesting life.

This year all our knitters in the group have been very busy knitting for all the babies in the Neo-Natal Unit at Tameside Hospital.

Fun has been had through the year with regular Bingo sessions, film shows and craft activities.

Here is a review on 2013

Our days out have been very enjoyable this year and our first was a visit to Hyde Bank Farm, which was followed by a shopping spree at Boundary Mill. Following this, we had a visit to Bridgemere Garden Centre and those that are not keen gardeners thoroughly enjoyed the day too with plenty on offer.

On the theme of food, we had fish 'n' chips at the famous Compo's Restaurant. We also had a meal at Peruga Restaurant in memory of Doris Timson which was kindly funded by her family, as a thank you to all Doris's friends at the club.

We had our usual Christmas outing to Oswaldtwistle Mill, a great day out! Following this with our Christmas Party in the St Mary's Hall.

There has been a lot of help & support with donations and table sales, as well as some work to improve the hall, and we wish to express our thanks and appreciation to all who got involved, which just goes to show how the Friendship Club is working for all its members (we now have 37 members)
